Peterborough City, situated in rural East England, Peterborough is a heritage city that is both rich in culture and history and is a vibrant modern city suitable for all kinds of visitors.

 

Highlights

 

  • Peterborough Cathedral - With free entry, this cathedral is a perfect example of medieval architecture on the outside and Romanesque on the inside. Completed around 800 years ago, little has changed since despite a fire in 2001. Visitors can enjoy a souvenir kiosk and coffee shop which is open Monday - Saturday 10am - 3pm. Tours of the cathedral are also available and can be booked in advance. The cathedral is open all year round, all day.

 

  • Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery - Visitors can enjoy interactive displays and collections that number more than 200,000 items. Includes a Victorian operating theatre and an underwater world with a collection of fossils from the Jurassic period. Meanwhile the art gallery features a number of collections from famous local and international artists. Open: Tuesday to Sunday 10am - 5pm. Open on Mondays during school holidays and on bank holidays. Admission is free.

 

  • Peterborough Arena and conference centre - recently renamed in 2012, the Arena has been rebranded to attract public shows, trade shows and events. With indoor and outdoor venues the Arena is home to concerts, ice shows, festivals and family events. Has been an events centre since 1971 and now welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Opening times dependent on the event taking place. Open year round and 7 days per week.

 

  • Cresset Theatre - Known as the city’s foremost wedding venue with three function suites. Suitable for events of all sizes, the Cresset is perfect for a corporate event but is perhaps best known as a theatre space with regular performances that take place year round and are suitable for adults and children. Live music, comedy and workshops are all showcased. Open daily 8am - 6pm, plus showtimes.

 

  • Big Sky Adventure Play - Suitable for children aged 0 to ten years old, this play adventure centre features mini go karts, a monorail and all manner of inflatables and slides. Will also provide children’s parties and educational activities. Nursery and childcare facilities also provided during term time and holidays. Open all year round Monday to saturday 10am - 6pm and Sunday 10am - 5pm.

Visitors can enjoy the heritage route that takes them past a number of fascinating buildings and venues that have been in existence for hundreds of years. For those who want to do a spot of shopping the central city features all the usual shops as well and a number of independent retailers.

 

The city is also proud of its environment and has a number of nature reserves and country walks for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy. Two theatres offer a vibrant nightlife and the plethora of restaurants and nightclubs gives all visitors an exciting and fun prospect.
